THE MIRACULOUS LANGUAGE OF THE QUR'AN: EVIDENCE OF DIVINE ORIGIN

by BASSAM SAEH

Paperback, ISBN 978-1-56564-665-0
2015

This study illustrates why the language of the Qur’an is miraculous, unique, and evidence of its divine authority. The author compares the language of the Qur’an with the language of pre-Islamic poetry, the Prophet’s words (Hadith), and the language of the Arabs both past and present, to demonstrate that although the Qur’an was revealed in Arabic it was at the same time an Arabic which was entirely new. Original and early Muslim audiences viewed this as miraculous and responded to the Qur’an’s words, sounds, rhythms etc. in a manner consistent with a deeper appreciation of its beauty and majesty which modern ears, trained by familiarity, and despite being surrounded by all manner of dictionaries and studies, are at a loss to capture. The author attempts to remove this veil and present the Qur’an to readers as if hearing it for the first time, to bring to life something of this wonder. In doing so he guides readers to appreciate the beauty of the Qur’an, to become more immersed in it, and have a clearer understanding of its structure and flow. Devoting special attention to Surah al-Muddaththir (chapter 74) to underpin his analysis, Saeh thus brings the Revelation to life, to demonstrate that each surah has distinct features and characteristics that make it stand out uniquely within the design and sweep of the whole.

UNDERSTANDING MAQASID AL SHARI'AH:
A CONTEMPORARY PERSPECTIVE

by MUSFIR BIN ALI AL-QAHTANI

ISBN: 978-1-56564-666-7
2015

Understanding Maqasid al-Shari'ah calls for the development of a juridical sense that is finely tuned to the higher objectives and purposes of Islamic rulings, the aims of which are the formulation of a new methodology in understanding the revealed texts and the reform of Muslim thought and its application. The author draws attention to the importance of understanding various levels of maqasid, including distinguishing between primary aims (al-maqasid al-asliyyah) and secondary aims (al-maqasid al-tabi'ah). Al-Qahtani asserts that a positive understanding of the objectives of the Shari'ah should produce affirmative human and cultural development in Muslim societies. The real strength of this work, however, is in the author’s application of higher objectives and aims to different areas of jurisprudence, such as in deriving and issuing religious rulings (ifta'), and to important social issues and problems present in Muslim societies, such as extremism, jihad, commanding right and forbidding wrong, social change, crisis of Muslim thought, countering religious excessiveness, the need for recreation and leisure, citizenship and nation-belonging, spreading beauty and harmony in Islam, and the role of Muslim women in society.

THE QUR’AN AND NORMATIVE RELIGIOUS PLURALISM: A THEMATIC STUDY OF THE QUR’AN

by ARIF KEMIL ABDULLAH

ISBN: 978-1-56564-657-5
2015

In a mutli-faith world, Islam is widely regarded as dogmatic and exclusivist. Yet in the Qur’an we have a great and worthy example of how to live in diversity, of powerful scriptural tenets that lend themselves precisely to engagement with those of other faiths. As such Islam has much to add to the debate on Religious Pluralism. For Muslims the issue is a delicate one. Aside from being tolerant and respectful of other faiths, advocating freedom of faith, and peaceful coexistence for all humanity, Muslims have to intellectually engage on matters of religious truth whilst defending the validity of their own Islamic tenets. This study is focused on the Qur’anic text. It explores the Qur’anic conception of normative religious pluralism with a view to providing answers to questions such as whether the Qur’an itself regards normative religious pluralism as a value system or simply a method through which the Qur’anic world view can be actualised. In doing so the author corrects some highly controversial misquoted, mistranslated, and/or quoted out of context verses of the Qur’an, including the so-called verse of the sword and the perception of not taking non-Muslims as friends. In reality, the Qur’an calls for freedom of faith and peaceful coexistence, but condemns oppression, religious persecution, and those who initiate hostilities. In this way it not only invokes human dignity, but restores it when it is violated.

EPISTEMOLOGICAL INTEGRATION: ESSENTIALS OF AN ISLAMIC METHODOLOGY

by FATHI HASAN MALKAWI

Paperback, ISBN: 978-1-56564-557-8
Hardback, ISBN: 978-1-56564-569-1
348pp, 2014

Epistemological Integration: Essentials of an Islamic Methodology is a program which seeks to construct an intellectual framework for Islamic methodology with a view to realizing practical training in the thoughtful investigation of issues related to knowledge in various fields. The book’s title affirms the distinctive types of integration that characterize Islamic methodology, including integration of sources, means, and schools of thought, as well as existing realities with desired ideals etc. This is fully consistent with human nature, as variety is fundamental to the functions people perform and skills they master. The work essentially makes the case that fundamental to any Muslim recovery is laying the foundations of sound thinking and values that integrate the two main sources of knowledge: Revelation and Reality (that is the created worlds both physical, societal and psychological) under the umbrella of Tawhid. Islamic methodology adopts that and extends human hopes to integrate efforts so that humanity can realistically achieve prosperity on earth and earn eternal happiness in the afterlife.

repro ETHICS OF ASSISTED REPRODUCTIVE MEDICINE: A COMPARATIVE STUDY OF WESTERN SECULAR AND ISLAMIC BIOETHICS

by SHARMIN ISLAM

Paperback, ISBN: 978-1-56564-561-5
Hardback, ISBN: 978-1-56564-556-1
226pp, 2013

Bioethics has developed over the last few decades into amajor field of inquiry. With advances in medicine progressively transforming our understanding of what constitutes life, there is need for a medical ethics to address many of the issues and challenges arising, particularly in the fields of genetics and reproduction. Of central significance are serious moral dilemmas confronting medical experts which require a theological perspective. Yet it is secular bioethics that is defining what constitutes human life and it is secular bioethics that is influencing policy on matters which concern us all and are likely to have grave societal impact. Is it right for a woman to act as surrogate for her sister? Or for a childless couple to resort to artificial insemination by donor? What does Islam have to say? Ethics of Assisted Reproductive Medicine compares and contrasts Western and Islamic models of bioethics to make the case that the Islamic perspective (taken from the Qur’an and the Sunnah) provides a viable and clear alternative that goes beyond the dominance of the secular and its various philosophical bases, to give Revelation and spiritual understanding precedence. In doing so, keeping to principles, it charts the way out of a confused circle of opinion that is making it very hard to decide “what is best.”

ABU ZAYD AL-BALKHI'S SUSTENANCE OF THE SOUL: THE COGNITIVE BEHAVIOUR THERAPY OF A NINTH CENTURY PHYSICIAN

by MALIK BADRI

Paperback, ISBN: 978-1-56564-599-8
74pp, 2013

Lying preserved in the Ayasofya Library in Istanbul is an astonishing manuscript. Written by the ninth century CE polymath, Abu Zayd al-Balkhi it tackles more than eleven centuries ago mental and psychological disorders which seem commonplace to us today. Al-Balkhi explains symptoms and treatments giving advice on preventive measures and how to return the body and soul to their natural healthy state. In doing so he displays a keen understanding of the human condition and the medical nature of the human emotional state. An astonishing feat given that many of the conditions he discusses were left largely unknown and untreated for centuries before being clinically defined as such, only as relatively recently as the 20th century. A genius his insights on human psychopathology as well as diagnoses of psychological ailments including stress, depression, fear and anxiety, phobic and obsessive-compulsive disorders, together with their treatment by cognitive behavior therapy, relate to us in every way and are in sync with modern psychology. Importantly they also incorporate a greater dimension to include the soul and the worship of God. Entitled Masalih al-Abdan wa al-Anfus (Sustenance for Bodies and Souls) al-Balkhi‘s manuscript is composed in two distinct parts. This work forms an English translation of the second (Sustenance of the Soul). The latter being perhaps of greater interest to readers given the worldwide increase in anxiety and mood disorders.

MAPPING THE SECULAR MIND: MODERNITY'S QUEST FOR A GODLESS UTOPIA

by HAGGAG ALI

Paperback, ISBN: 978-1-56564-593-6
Hardback, ISBN: 978-1-56564-594-3
210pp, 2013

The secular mind had a grand plan, to establish an earthly paradise, a utopia of the here and now, a modern civilization governed by human reason, rationality, and the triumph of progress. Whilst ideals are one thing, the means to realize them is something else. Away from the hype, emancipating humanity from the ‘shackles’ of God and religion has proved no easy matter. Mapping the Secular Mind critically examines issues of reason, rationality, and secular materialism, to explore how these mental perceptions, or ways of mapping the world, have affected human interaction and sociological development. It does this by comparing and contrasting the ideas of Abdelwahab M. Elmessiri (1938–2008) a leading Arab intellectual, and Zygmunt Bauman (1925), one of the world’s foremost sociologists. In the last few decades, an emergent Western critique of modernity has inspired Muslim intellectuals to develop new ideas, images, terms and concepts that state their positions towards the tendencies of secular modernity, its transformations and consequences, and how it manipulates perceptions of reality. The book challenges foundations of secular ideology to argue that its aspirations have deeply transformed human consciousness and man’s sense of self, leaving him a creature of purposeless consumption, wearied by the search for fulfilment, and controlled by materialistic laws governing physical phenomena. It also offers a more darker thesis, that Fascist Germany and the Eugenics movement were a form of Social Darwinism taken to its logical course. These were not an aberration from the principles of modernity, Ali argues, but a consistent outcome of the modern worldview, with the seeds of self-destruction being woven into the very fabric of the philosophy.

ISLAM: RELIGION, PRACTICE, CULTURE & WORLD ORDER

by ISMA'IL RAJI AL FARUQI

Paperback, ISBN: 978–1–56564–587–5
Hardback, ISBN: 978–1–56564–588-2
102pp, October 2012

Professor Isma'il Rajial Faruqi, Palestinian-American philosopher, visionary, and an authority in comparative religion, was one of the foremost Muslim scholars of the 20th century. In this study he presents the meaning and message of Islam to the wider world community. Key elements of the faith are summarized and explained in an overall theme of seven parts consisting of 21 chapters. Yet the chapters represent far more than a simple description of Muslim peoples and orthodox practice. Al Faruqi was a great thinker, formidable in logic, and relished intellectual engagement on every level, particularly when it came to Islam and other Faiths. And it is this unique reasoning process that is reflected in this work, al Faruqi's signature contribution, which not only expounds on Islam as spiritual faith and action, but also on Islam the great experience.

Faruqi1 ISLAM AND KNOWLEDGE: AL FARUQI'S CONCEPT OF RELIGION IN ISLAMIC THOUGHT

edited by IMTIYAZ YUSUF

Hardback, ISBN: 978-1-78076-068-1
368pp, August 2012
(Published by I.B. Tauris in association with IIIT and the Prince Alwaleed Bin Talal Centre for Muslim-Christian Understanding, Georgetown University, Washington, DC, USA)

We live in an era when the Islamic World is making a range of attempts to redefine itself and to grapple with the challenges of modernity, technological progress and globalization. Many schools of thought – some traditional and revivalist, others a more direct response to the developments in the information
age – have emerged that seek to position modern Islam within the context of this rapidly changing contemporary world. Exploring and defining the relationship between religion and knowledge was the centre-piece of the ideas of Isma‘il Raji al Faruqi. A distinguished twentieth-century Arab-American scholar of Islam, al Faruqi formulated ideas that have made substantial contributions to the Islam and modernity discourse. This book’s exploration of the interaction between Islam and knowledge takes in not only a philosophical examination of this relationship, but also the ways in which an Islamic perspective can relate to our understanding of science, the arts, architecture, technology and a whole range of other knowledge-based fields of enquiry. Many distinguished scholars have contributed to this illuminating volume, including Seyyed Hossein Nasr, John Esposito, Charles Fletcher and others, producing a body of insight and perspective which will prove an essential reference point both for scholars of Islam as well as students of philosophy and comparative religion.

CONTEMPORARY APPROACHES TO QUR'AN AND SUNNAH

Edited by MAHMOUD AYOUB

Paperback, ISBN: 978-1-56564-577-6
Hardback, ISBN: 978-1-56564-578-3
234pp, March 2012

THE QUR’AN AND SUNNAH are the two primary sources of Muslim faith, life, law and morality. The Qur’an is for Muslims the foundation of their faith and the Sunnah is the framework of their morality. Together they constitute the two sources of the law (Shari¢ah) of God, a guide to prosperity and happiness in this life and to the bliss of the hereafter. Although the Qur’an and Sunnah are materially and formally two independent sources, they are inextricably bound in a dynamic relationship. The rulings and precepts (a^k¥m) of the Qur’an constitute the law (shar¢) of God. They are supplemented by the precepts of the authentic Sunnah, which possess authority second only to the precepts of the Qur’an. The Qur’an commands Muslims, “Whatever the Messenger gives you, that you must take, and whatever he forbids you, you must desist therefrom...” (59:7). In answer to this need, IIIT convened an annual Summer School for scholars to study the Qur’an and Sunnah. The eleven papers included in this volume constitute the proceedings of the first Summer Institute, 2008. The essays making up the collection are focused discussions, and comprised of diverse writings on significant subjects relating to the Qur’an and the Sunnah, of common and intellectual interest as well as relevancy.

OBESERVING THE OBSERVER - THE STATE OF ISLAMIC STUDIES IN AMERICAN UNIVERSITIES

Edited by MUMTAZ AHMAD, ZAHID BUKHARI & SULAYMAN NYANG

Paperback, ISBN: 978-1-56564-580-6
Hardback, ISBN: 978-1-56564-581-3
262pp, March 2012

The collection of papers in this volume documents the study of Islam in American Universities. Over the last few decades the United States has seen significant growth in the study of Islam and Islamic societies in institutions of higher learning fueled primarily by events including economic relations of the U.S. with Muslim countries, migration of Muslims into the country, conversion of Americans to Islam, U.S. interests in Arab oil resources, involvement of Muslims in the American public square, and the tragic events of 9/11. Although there is increasing recognition that the study of Islam and the role
of Muslims is strategically essential in a climate of global integration, multiculturalism, and political turmoil, nevertheless, the state of Islamic Studies in America is far from satisfactory. The issue needs to be addressed, particularly as the need for intelligent debate and understanding is continuously stifled by what some have termed an “Islam industry” run primarily by fly-by journalists, think tank pundits, and cut-and-paste “experts.”

ANTHROPOMORPHIC DEPICTIONS OF GOD: THE CONCEPT OF GOD IN JUDAIC, CHRISTIAN AND ISLAMIC TRADITIONS - REPRESENTING THE UNREPRESENTABLE

by ZULFIQAR ALI SHAH

Paperback, ISBN: 978-1-56564-575-2
Hardback, ISBN: 978-1-56564-576-9
762pp, March 2012

This monumental study examines issues of anthropomorphism in the three Abrahamic Faiths, as viewed through the texts of the Hebrew Bible, the New Testament and the Qur’an. Throughout history Christianity and Judaism have tried to make sense of God. While juxtaposing the Islamic position against this, the author addresses the Judeo-Christian worldview and how each has chosen to framework its encounter with God, to what extent this has been the result of actual scripture and to what extent the product of theological debate, or church decrees of later centuries and absorption of Hellenistic philosophy. Shah also examines Islam’s heavily anti-anthropomorphic stance and Islamic theological discourse on Tawhid as well as the Ninety-Nine Names of God and what these have meant in relation to Muslim understanding of God and His attributes. Describing how these became the touchstone of Muslim discourse with Judaism and Christianity he critiques theological statements and perspectives that came to dilute if not counter strict monotheism. As secularism debates whether God is dead, the issue of anthropomorphism has become of immense importance. The quest for God, especially in this day and age, is partly one of intellectual longing. To Shah, anthropomorphic concepts and corporeal depictions of the Divine are perhaps among the leading factors of modern atheism. As such he ultimately draws the conclusion that the postmodern longing for God will not be quenched by pre-modern anthropomorphic and corporeal concepts of the Divine which have simply brought God down to this cosmos, with a precise historical function and a specified location, reducing the intellectual and spiritual force of what God is and represents, causing the soul to detract from a sense of the sacred and thereby belief in Him.

Ethics_2011 ETHICS OF DISAGREEMENT IN ISLAM

by TAHA JABIR ALALWANI

Paperback: ISBN 978-1-56564-359-8
Hardback: ISBN: 978-1-56564-360-4
September 2011

The Ethics of Disagreement may be perceived has an explanation of the etiquette envisioned by Islam for all those engaged in discourse and intellectual dialogue. To a great extent, the book is an exposition of the higher principles and purposes of the Shari'ah which provide Muslims with perspectives far vaster than those afforded by pedantic debate over points of law and procedure, or fine distinctions between
conflicting theological arguments. In fact, experience has shown that long immersion in such futile debate often renders the mind incapable of comprehending real situations and making value judgements on changing circumstances.

Since the book was originally intended to address opposing Islamic political parties in one particular part of the Muslim world, the author went to great lengths to give examples from classical Muslim historical experience. In particular, he analyzes instances of judicial disagreement between the early fuqaha’, differences that were not allowed to go beyond the academic or to cause hard feelings among the debaters and dissenters alike. Certainly, the differences between those early scholars never led them to lose sight of the higher purposes of the Shari'ah or their responsibilities.

Although this book may more appropriately be titled The Ethics of Disagreement between the Classical Jurists, it nonetheless serves as a useful introduction to the subject of disagreement in general. It also lays down for contemporary Muslims many commendable examples of forbearance and understanding on the part of some of the greatest personalities and scholars in Muslim history. In this lies the utility of this book.
AlShura_2011 AL-SHURA - THE QUR'RANIC PRINCIPLE OF CONSULTATION

by AHMAD AL-RAYSUNI

Paperback: ISBN 978-1-56564-361-1
Hardback: ISBN 978-1-56564-362-8
September 2011

Muslims remain largely unaware of the importance and value of the Qur’anic principle of al-Shura (mutual consultation) and the significant role it can play in the advancement and reform of Muslim society. In this work, the author attempts to introduce and examine key meanings and practices of al-Shura, trace its historical evolution, and explore ways in which the principle can be introduced, institutionalized and applied in Muslim societies. There is no doubt that al-Shura has been sidelined throughout the Muslim world and the reasons for this are both historically and politically complex. According to the author, although much has been written on the subject, in reality it has been at best ineffectively applied and at worst heedlessly ignored. Even today it is a hotly contested issue. As al-Shura is increasingly associated with democratic participation in a decision-making process, debate has ignited with critics challenging the notion of equating the principle with western notions of democracy, with others claiming that the principle allows for a meaning that breaks the grip of centralized power. These and other issues are investigated with careful scholarship. Al-Raysuni concludes that al-Shura should be adopted as a way of life for all Muslims to protect their interests and as a vital tool for reconstruction and reform. In doing so he addresses the subject from some intriguing new angles, giving insight into areas hitherto little, if at all, examined.
Apostasy_2011 APOSTASY IN ISLAM - A HISTORICAL & SCRIPTUAL ANALYSIS

by TAHA JABIR ALALWANI

Paperback: ISBN 978-1-56564-363-5
Hardback: ISBN 978-1-56564-364-2
September 2011

What is the legally prescribed penalty, if any, for apostasy (al-riddah), and how does this relate to the demand for religious tolerance as stipulated in verse 2:256 of the Qur’an “There shall be no compulsion in matters of faith”?

It is an established fact that the Prophet never, in his entire life, put an apostate to death. Yet, the issue remains one of the most controversial to have afflicted the Muslim world down the centuries. It is also the source of much damaging media coverage today as Islamic jurisprudence stands accused of a flagrant disregard for human rights and freedom of expression.

The subject of this book is a highly sensitive and important one. The author rightly concentrates on evidence, to examine the historical origins of the debate in rigorous detail, as well as the many moral and contextual issues surrounding it. Disputing arguments put forward by proponents of the death penalty he contends that both the Qur’an and the Sunnah promote freedom of belief including the act of exiting the Faith and do not support capital punishment for the sin of al-riddah. Note that attention is on the word sin, for there is qualification: as long as one’s apostasy has not been accompanied by anything else that would be deemed a criminal act, particularly in terms of national security, then according to the author, it remains a matter strictly between God and the individual. Of interest is the fact that the Qur’an significantly refers to individuals repeatedly returning to unbelief after having believed, but does not mention that they should be killed or punished. This work has been written at a time of great complexity and vulnerability when a true understanding of the higher intents and values of the Qur’an and the Sunnah, maqasid al-shariah, is sorely needed. The author employs a strong evidence-based approach examining in detail the Qur’an and authentic Hadith, taking into consideration traditional approaches to the study of the Islamic textual sciences and other fields of knowledge, as well as analyzing scholastic interpretation.

Taking the life of a person without just cause is according to the Qur’an equivalent to the killing of the whole of mankind. It is vital therefore, that in the interests of compassion and justice, as well as freedom of belief, this subject is clearly addressed once and for all.
Quranic_2011 THE QUR'ANIC WORLDVIEW - A SPRINGBOARD FOR CULTURAL REFORM

by ADBULHAMID ABUSULAYMAN

Paperback: ISBN 978-1-56564-365-9
Hardback: ISBN 978-1-56564-366-6
September 2011

This is a carefully reasoned, positive, and largely reflective work. Looking back at the various stages of Islamic historical development, AbuSulayman puts forward a thesis that focuses on the recovery of what is termed the Qur’anic worldview. By this is meant an ethical, monotheistic, and purposeful perspective on the world and those within it. Our faith will only be complete when we have become utterly sincere in our love for God, a love expressed in a pure, passionate love for goodness and truth in this world. It was the strict internalization of this perspective and close adherence to the principles of the Qur’an which AbuSulayman contends, played a key factor in galvanizing the devout and intensely God-conscious followers of fledgling Islam to achieve the successes that they once did, the profound historical and global impact of which is still the subject of much study and admiration today. The rebirth of Islamic identity through this Qur’anic worldview is the key requirement of our times and a prerequisite for any future healthy and viable development of Muslim societies.
Bennabi_2011 THE SOCIO-INTELLECTUAL FOUNDATIONS OF MALEK BENNABI'S APPROACH TO CIVILISATION

by BADRANE BENLAHCENE

Paperback: ISBN 978-1-56564-367-3
Hardback: ISBN 978-1-56564-368-0
September 2011

Since the publication of Samuel Huntington’s “The Clash of Civilizations” concern about civilization has been reintroduced into the debate on the world order. Malek Bennabi (1905–1973), prominent Algerian thinker and great Muslim intellectual, intently focused on unravelling the causes of Muslim decline and the success of Western civilization and culture. The key problem he theorized lay not in the Qur’an or Islamic faith but in Muslims themselves. The author investigates Bennabi’s approach to civilization and the fundamental principles drawn, using metatheorizing methodology. In doing so he sheds further light on perhaps one of the more intriguing elements of Bennabi’s theory, that civilization is governed by internal-external and social-intellectual factors and that an equation can be generated for civilization itself. This equation of Man+Soil+Time = Civilization and of which religion, according to Bennabi, forms the all-important catalyst, is explained and its significance in terms of the reversal of Muslim decline evaluated. What is clearly apparent is that for Bennabi, Man is the central force in any civilizing process and without him the other two elements are of no value.

With regard to outcomes, Bennabi’s unerring conviction that unless Muslims changed their spiritual condition they could not effect any far-reaching, meaningful change in society is echoed in the Qur’anic verse: “Verily, never will Allah change the condition of a people until they change what is in themselves” (13:11).

Interfaith_2011 INTERFAITH DIALOGUE - A GUIDE FOR MUSLIMS

by MUHAMMAD SHAFIQ & MOHAMMED ABU-NIMER

Paperback: ISBN 978-1-56564-369-7
Hardback: ISBN 978-1-56564-370-3
September 2011

Islam recognizes a plurality of religions and asks Muslims to respect other religions. The primary role of interfaith dialogue is to remove misunderstanding and accept difference, the aim being to generate a climate of peaceful coexistence and harmonious social relations. And this is perhaps more needed today than ever before, as mankind is increasingly called upon to exercise tolerance in a markedly volatile world, where living and working together in diversity is fast becoming the norm. Interfaith dialogue is by no means easy, defensive reaction, uncomfortable exchange and an overwhelming desire to avoid a perceived compromise of deeply held principles are some of the pitfalls that can easily cool commitment and the best of endeavors. It is here that this Guide makes an important contribution. The book is designed to guide Muslims who are interested and/or involved in building relations with those of the Jewish and Christian faiths.

Interfaith Dialogue: A Guide for Muslims provides:

  • A guide to prepare both leaders and participants for a dialogical relationship with non-Muslims.
  • A clarification of dialogue as a form of communication that differs from the typical logical or theological debates used both between Muslims and between Muslims and non-Muslims.
  • A tool to educate and clarify terminology so that misconceptions concerning interfaith/interreligious groups can be avoided.
  • A method to remind Muslims of the adab (etiquette), and the ethics, of disagreement based on the Qur’an and Sunnah so that they may achieve the most effective form of communication.
Reformation_2011 TOWARD OUR REFORMATION FROM LEGALISM TO VALUE-ORIENTED ISLAMIC LAW AND JURISPRUDENCE

by MOHAMMAD OMAR FAROOQ

Paperback: ISBN 978-1-56564-371-0
Hardback: ISBN 978-1-56564-372-7
September 2011

It is the author’s contention that at the heart of the Muslim predicament lies ignorance and/or lack of commitment to core Islamic values, thus what is advocated throughout this work is a return to what is termed a “value-oriented” approach. We further learn that with the passage of time what we today consider to be the Shariah is in effect an original hub enveloped in a labyrinthine shroud of scholastic views and deductions hindering Muslim development, and to rely on fraudulent hadith and fallacious implementation of hudud law is not only to betray the spirit of the Qur’an and the Prophet’s message, but a disastrous exercise. Consequences being blatant abuse of the Muslim populace under cover of implementing a bogus Shariah. This abuse and misapplication is explored throughout the work.

The book consists of five core chapters. After the introductory first chapter, chapter two focuses on the Shariah and explores issues concerning misconceptions about the term as well as the propensity towards legalism. Chapter three focuses on Hadith, examining certain vital issues pertaining to the subject, concluding with the documentation of the problems concerning the misuse of Hadith in deriving or formulating laws. Chapter four deals with the subject of ijma, where most of the claims concerning it are demonstrated to be unfounded and untenable based on a consistent lack of consensus regarding almost all aspects of ijma as a source of Islamic jurisprudence. Chapter five, on qiyas, deals with the many conceptual problems of the misapplication of this tool in Islamic legal promulgation. Thereafter, chapter six emphasizes that an empirical foundation is critically needed to render balance to Islamic law once again, by balance meaning that text-orientation be duly matched by life-orientation, in today’s sense. Clearly the author contends that the prevailing conditions of the Muslim world are not expected to change unless Muslim thought and understanding of the foundational sources of Islam also changes in the first instance.

civ2010 STUDIES IN ISLAMIC CIVILIZATION - THE MUSLIM CONTRIBUTION TO THE RENAISSANCE

by AHMED ESSA with OTHMAN ALI

Paperback: ISBN 978-1-56564-350-5
Hardback: ISBN 978-1-56564-351-2
September 2011

Studies in Islamic Civilization draws upon the works of Western scholars to make the case that without the tremendous contribution of the Muslim world there would have been no Renaissance in Europe. For almost a thousand years Islam was arguably one of the leading civilizations of the world spanning a geographic area greater than any other. It eliminated social distinctions between classes and races, made clear that people should enjoy the bounties of the earth provided they did not ignore morals and ethics, and rescued knowledge that would have been lost, if not forever, then at least for centuries. The genius of its scholars triggered the intellectual tradition of Europe and for over seven hundred years its language, Arabic, was the international language of science. Strange then that its legacy lies largely ignored and buried in time. In the words of Aldous Huxley, “Great is truth, but still greater, from a practical point of view, is silence about truth. By simply not mentioning certain subjects... propagandists have influenced opinion much more effectively than they could have by the most eloquent denunciations.” Studies in Islamic Civilization is a compelling attempt to redress this wrong and restore the historical truths of a “golden age” that ushered in the Islamic renaissance, and as a by-product that of the West. In doing so it gives a bird’s eye view of the achievements of a culture that at its height was considered the model of human progress and development.

E-W WHERE EAST MEETS WEST - APPROPRIATING THE ISLAMIC ENCOUNTER FOR A SPIRITUAL-CULTURAL REVIVIAL

by Mona Abul-Fadl

Hardback: £12.95, US$19.95
(ISBN: 978-1-56564-353-6)

Paperback: £8.95, US$9.95
(ISBN: 978-1-56564-354-3)

The fate of civilization lies in the balance of culture, not power. This Mona Abul-Fadl penetrating work argues that the terms of the culture of our times will determine the future of politics and societies. Islam continues to be, as much as it was in the past, at the hub and crossroads of contemporary civilization. The difference from a historical perspective, lies in the West’s control of the political setting, the primary factor in qualifying the terms of today’s civilization, and in setting its pace and direction accordingly.

The modern West takes pride in its rational liberalism, yet for all its reverent skepticism it is not at all sure how it can handle its growing human problems. As such it makes sense to recall a timeless exhortation of natural wisdom, confirmed in divine revelation, handed down over the generations and understandable to all, in both East and West. It needs to be taken seriously on the agenda of any future encounter between East and West which presumes to address the future ecology of a moral global economy. When the individual has become a measure unto himself, the community dissolves: or at least, its matrix is severely undermined. In the meantime, there is nothing that can secure the individual against his own excesses. In forgetting their Creator, their origin, and their destiny, God has made them oblivious of themselves.

Given today’s “global village,” where a century’s technological accomplishments have dissipated the physical distances between communities and cultures, the East/West encounter has become doubly imperative: not just to avoid the consequences of potentially explosive misunderstandings, but also to deliberate together and to redefine the bounds of rationality and the meaning of community. This is a task which challenges a common endeavor to bring together values and good will as well as the power to give them substance.

AUTH AUTHENTICATION OF HADITH - REDEFINING THE CRITERIA

by Israr Ahmad Khan

Hardback: £16.00, US$24.95
(ISBN: 978–1–56564–449-6)

Paperback: £10.00, US$14.95
(ISBN: 978–1–56564–448–9)

In today’s complex and volatile world the consequences of relying on fraudulent and counterfeit Hadith to legitimise extremist behaviour, issue violent fatwas, and justify blatant abuse, particularly of women, is not only far too easy but in fact dangerous. Israr Khan addresses the sensitive topic of Hadith authentication, focusing on the criteria adopted by classical scholars to maintain that concentration on the continuity and accuracy of the chain of narrators, rather than the textual content of Hadith, has led to particular Hadith being included which either contradict other Hadith directly, project the Prophet (SAAS) in an uncharacteristic light, or do not reflect and/or conflict with the teachings of the Qur’an. The study traces in careful detail the historical development of the oral and written traditions, as well as the many targeted attempts at fabrication that took place, critiquing in methodical detail certain Hadith which have come to be widely accepted as “authentic.” The prominent collections we have today, were made possible by the development of the science of Hadith criticism, and Muslim scholars deserve deep appreciation for their painstaking work, as well as their invaluable contribution towards preserving the Hadith literature to the best of their ability. However, insists the author, the process is ongoing, and the closed door policy which currently surrounds Hadith authentication needs to be carefully reexamined.

CONTEMPLATION: An Islamics Psychospiritual Study

(ISBN: 1-56564-273-2)

The author endeavours to distinguish Islamic contemplation from other forms of meditation, comparing it to thinking and especially transcendental meditation which has achieved much following in the West in recent years. The author suggests that when Muslims contemplate the creation, the self and the laws of the Almighty therein, they excel above other contemplators because they have higher incentives and expectations from God. This book is an example of how the himan sciences can support faith and spiritual values, and how, when a mind is guided by the Qur'an and the Sunnah, it will be graced by the light of faith and the light of revelation, as well as by the guiding light of reason.
